Das Buch schildert die Entstehung der christlichen Religion, des talmudischen Judentums und des Islam mit ihren vielfaltigen Verflechtungen und weltpolitischen Wirkungen. Zugleich zeigt es auf, dass in der Zeit zwischen Jesus und Mohammed das entstanden ist, was wir heute unter Religionen verstehen: uberregionale Glaubensgemeinschaften, die Ethiken propagieren, sozial-karitative Aufgaben erfullen, politischen Einfluss nehmen und eine Theologie als rationale Reflexion auf ihre Vorstellungen und Praktiken entwickelt haben. Zahlreiche Fallbeispiele illustrieren die Ambivalenzen von Religion: ihre destruktive, aber auch humanisierende Kraft; ihre Rationalitat und ihre Irrationalitat; ihre verinnerlichenden und individualisierenden Tendenzen, aber auch den Trend zu Kollektivierung und Politisierung. Am Ende dieser Aufarbeitung der Fruhgeschichte unserer religiosen Welt steht ein Versuch, auf der Grundlage der historischen Erkenntnisse Voraussetzungen humaner Religion zu identifizieren.
