[The Revelation of John] The commentary addresses a book puzzling for Christians, partly even repulsive in terms of its contents, but still present in reception history. Nothing is as it seems to be – it’s what makes sense. The revelation given to John presents itself as a subversive revelation of reality. As an apocalyptic first-person narrative, it seeks to generate meaning in the world of the addressees. Addressed to early Christian communities in the Roman-dominated west of Asia Minor, it deals with the veneration of the Roman emperor as ruler based on the image of God as exclusive and justice deity. It looks at congregations that seek their place as believers in Christ under Roman rule. It develops an alternative world that becomes real in the congregation gathered in worship and recommends a radical demarcation from the surrounding world.
