English summary: Under what circumstances could a mentally ill person be committed to an “asylum” during the Weimar Republic, the Nazi state, and the divided Germany? This longitudinal study examines both successful and unsuccessful attempts to (re)regulate public accommodations and to provide a legal framework for the treatment of “insanity.
