Die drei bedeutendsten Marienkirchen Roms stehen im Mittelpunkt des funften Bandes des Corpus Die Kirchen der Stadt Rom im Mittelalter 1050-1300. Santa Maria Maggiore auf dem Hugel Esquilin ist die Alteste und Groate unter ihnen. Bis heute ist die Bausubstanz aus dem 5. Jahrhundert weitestgehend erhalten. Seit dem Fruhmittelalter stehen das kleine Heiligtum mit der Krippe Jesu und die Wunder vollbringende Marienikone, die dem Evangelisten Lukas zugeschrieben wird, im Zentrum der Verehrung. Auch Santa Maria in Trastevere beherbergt seit dem Fruhmittelalter eine wundertatige Ikone und eine nach dem Vorbild von Santa Maria Maggiore gefertigte Krippe. Mit Beginn des Neubaus im 12. Jahrhundert traten beide Kirchen architektonisch in Konkurrenz. Als jungste der drei Kirchen verdankt Santa Maria in Aracoeli ihren monumentalen Bau auf dem Kapitolshugel in Rom den Minderbrudern, die im 13. Jahrhundert auf dem Gelande des bestehenden Benediktinerklosters Santa Maria in Capitolio das romische Hauptquartier der Franziskaner errichteten. Seit dem 11. Jahrhundert existiert auch hier ein Marienbild, das den Romerinnen und Romern seit der Pest von 1348 als wichtiges Schutzbild diente.
