The series includes both preserved original inscriptions and those which survive only as copies. “Die Deutschen Inschriften” is by far the oldest current project aiming at the compilation of medieval and early modern inscriptions. It was founded over 75 years ago as a joint project of the German and Austrian Academies of Sciences and Humanities on the initiative of the Germanist Friedrich Panzer (Heidelberg) with substantial cooperation from the historians Karl Brandi (Gottingen) and Hans Hirsch (Vienna). German description: Der Band enthalt in 230 Artikeln die vom 13. Jahrhundert bis zum Jahr 1666 entstandenen Inschriften der Lutherstadt Eisleben. Die epigraphische Uberlieferung der Stadt ist wie ihre Geschichte im Wesentlichen von drei Faktoren gepragt. Eisleben war zum einen Haupt- und Residenzort der Grafschaft Mansfeld, zum anderen der Mittelpunkt des Kupferbergbaus im Mansfelder Land und zum dritten ein Zentrum der Ehrung und Verehrung Martin Luthers, der in der Stadt 1483 geboren und 1546 gestorben war. Seine Bildnisse und die seines theologischen Mitstreiters Philipp Melanchthon schmuckten und schmucken als beschriftete Gemalde und Stuckreliefs fast alle Pfarrkirchen Eislebens. An und in den spatmittelalterlichen Kirchen manifestierte sich der Wohlstand des stadtischen Burgertums. Jede Kirche hat Bauinschriften, und aus jeder Kirche stammt ein prachtvolles Altarretabel aus vorreformatorischer Zeit. Vier davon tragen Inschriften. Die nach Einfuhrung der Reformation erneuerten Kirchenausstattungen des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts sind allerdings zum grossten Teil verloren und nur noch durch ihre abschriftlich uberlieferten Stiftungs- und Setzungsinschriften bekannt. Der Chor der St. Annenkirche, die in der Fruhen Neuzeit auch Grablege der Grafen von Mansfeld war, hat aber noch seine Ausstattung aus der Zeit der Renaissance. Ein vergleichbarer Bestand fruhneuzeitlicher Gedachtnismale des graflichen Hauses ist in der St. Andreaskirche erhalten; ihn erganzen spatmittelalterliche Grabplatten aus dem untergegangenen Nonnenkloster Neuhelfta bei Eisleben. Burgerliche Grabplatten und skulptierte Epitaphien befinden sich noch unter den Kolonnaden des alten Gottesackers, wahrend die qualitatvollen Gemaldeepitaphien des Gottesackers in den beiden Luthermuseen ausgestellt sind. Darunter sind Gedachtnismale jener Burger, die durch den Kupferbergbau wohlhabend geworden waren.
