Der Band enthalt 438 Katalogartikel mit fast 800 Inschriften, die aus der originalen und kopialen Uberlieferung erfasst werden konnten. Der Bestand spiegelt die Geschichte Magdeburgs von der Grundung des Erzbistums durch Kaiser Otto I. im 10. Jahrhundert bis in die Zeit Ottos von Guericke im 17. Jahrhundert wider. Die Inschriften reprasentieren die beiden dynamischen Zentren, welche die Entwicklung Magdeburgs zu einer mittelalterlichen und fruhneuzeitlichen Grossstadt begunstigten: den erzbischoflichen Sitzmit dem Domkapitel sowie die starke Stadtgesellschaft mit dem Rat an der Spitze, die sich im 12./13. Jahrhundert etablierte.
