Das hier vorliegende Buch geht auf eine Anregung von Jacob Wackernagel (1853-1938) zuruck. Im Jahre 1892 schrieb er in einer Besprechung der zweiten Auflage von D. B. Monros Grammar of the Homeric dialect das Folgende: “Der Sprachforschung hatte Monro allerdings noch besser gedient, wenn er sich der Muhe unterzogen hatte, die Thatsachen der Formenlehre vollstandig zu registrieren. (…) Hoffentlich folgt auf den trefflichen lexikalischen Index Gehrings (…) bald ein nach grammatischen Kategorien geordneter.” Nach mehr als hundert Jahren wird jetzt der Versuch gemacht, den Formenbestand der Verben bei Homer im Sinne Wackernagels vollstandig zu erfassen und darzustellen.
