Nach der Grundung vor Akkon 1190 und der Erhebung zum Ritterorden 1198 breitete sich der Deutsche Orden rasch aus, erwarb Landereien, Burgen und Herrschaften im Heiligen Land, in den Reichen am Mittelmeer, in Deutschland und vor allem in Preussen und Livland. In den baltischen Landern baute er viel beachtete Herrschaften auf. Schon im spaten Mittelalter wandelte er sich von einem religios gepragten Orden zu einer Adelskorporation, um sich nach dem Ende des Alten Reiches zu einer vorrangig karitativ arbeitenden Institution zu entwickeln. Der Autor schildert umfassend und eindrucksvoll die Geschichte des Deutschen Ordens von den Anfangen bis ins 20. Jahrhundert.
