The white marble island of Paros has been one of the most important centers for ancient sculptural art since the 6th century BC. This volume provides for the first time a comprehensive analysis of the archaic sculpture of Paros with reference to new findings. Based on works of proven origin which have been included in a detailed catalog, this book presents the specific stylistic characteristics of Parian sculpture. In addition, previously established criteria are reviewed and expanded using methods of comparative stylistic analysis. The partly surprising results on the use of form in Parian workshops provide new perspectives on the diversity and complexity of archaic artistic landscapes and demand reassessment of this much-discussed phenomenon. German text.
