English summary: Since its foundation by Wilhelm Lohe in 1854 the Diakonie Neuendettelsau has been committed at an international level. A particular focus of diaconal activities was geographically on the United States. In cooperation with pastors of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Iowa the deaconesses of Neuendettelsau were engaged in building up a Lutheran Christian social service. This publication makes available extensive and coherent source material treating the pioneering days of the American history of Christian social services, for the first time, to international research. Furthermore it provides insights into the multicultural and multireligious immigrant society of the 19th century in the U.S.A. Jahrhundert.
