But how could it happen that a religion whose founder preached peace declared a campaign of war a sacred act? And what constitutes a “holy” war anyway? This book examines the origin and development of the idea of the Christian “holy war,” beginning with Constantine the Great, in order to understand why highly-educated theologians such as Bernard of Clairvaux could claim that to kill a heathen would honor Christ.

This book examines the origin and development of the idea of the Christian “holy war,” beginning with Constantine the Great, in order to understand why highly-educated theologians such as Bernard of Clairvaux could claim that to kill a heathen would honor Christ. In analyzing this development, the not insignificant role of the Byzantine emperor Heraclius and its reception in the West is comprehensively acknowledged for the first time, shining a light on the influence of the Byzantines on the emergence of the idea of a Christian holy war. November des Jahres 1095 die lateinische Christenheit dazu auf, gen Osten zu ziehen, um das Heilige Land von den Muslimen zu “befreien”. Doch wie konnte es geschehen, dass eine Religion, deren Grunder den Frieden gepredigt hat, einen Kriegszug zu einer heiligen Handlung erklarte? Und was macht einen “heiligen” Krieg uberhaupt aus? Dieses Buch untersucht die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Idee vom christlichen “heiligen Krieg” seit Konstantin dem Groaen, um nachvollziehen zu konnen, weshalb hochgebildete Theologen wie etwa Bernhard von Clairvaux behaupten konnten, dass im Tod eines Heiden Christus geehrt werde. Bei der Betrachtung und wissenschaftlichen Aufarbeitung dieses Weges wird erstmals die hierbei nicht unbedeutende Rolle des byzantinischen Kaisers Herakleios und deren Rezeption im Westen umfassend gewurdigt, wodurch der Einfluss der Byzantiner bei der Entstehung der Idee vom christlichen heiligen Krieg in ein neues Licht geruckt wird.
