The late nobles of the late 14th century were stylized as heroic knights, according to the traditions of France and Germany. This book shows that this is by no means about the transfiguration of moribund ideals. Rather, these heroic images are a part of controversial discussions about the role of the nobility in the changing society of the late Middle Ages. They uphold the nobility’s claim to keep pace with military and social change by mobilizing traditional legitimation resources of the nobility, such as chivalry, prince-worship and the noble family.

Vielmehr schreiben sich diese Heldenbilder in kontrovers gefuhrte Diskussionen um die Rolle des Adels in der sich wandelnden Gesellschaft des Spatmittelalters ein. Sie stehen fur den Anspruch des Adels, mit dem Wandel auf militarischem und sozialem Feld Schritt zu halten, indem sie traditionelle Legitimationsressourcen des Adels wie Rittertum, Furstendienst und die adlige Familie mobilisieren und in ein facettenreiches Wechselverhaltnis setzen.
