This study concerns the sanctuaries and the cults of the goddess Demeter in the wider area of Athens from Classical to late Imperial times, according to the literary sources, the epigraphic testimonies, the excavation findings and the iconography of the goddess.
More precisely, it attempts to elaborate on the worship of Demeter mainly in the city, but also in the deme of Attica, with the sanctuary of Eleusis, the Eleusinian Mysteries and the Thesmophoria as points of reference presenting old and new sanctuaries of Demeter in the wider region (in the vicinity) of Athens.
Architectural remains and epigraphic testimonies offer new topographic information on the location of the goddess’ sanctuaries, whereas the location and function of the sanctuaries within the Athenian city-state, the worship of Demeter in Athens from Classical to late Imperial times, the institutional and fertile nature of Demeter, and the syncretism of the goddess with other fertility and chthonic deities from Classical to late Imperial times, such as Ge Kourotrophos or Karpophoros, Kore, Hecate, Artemis, Eileithyia, the Mother of the gods-Cybele and Aphrodite are topics that this research highlights. The aim is not only to emphasize the importance of Demeter’s worship in the life of the city-state, but also to enrich our knowledge, which in the future can provide an adequate background for further research.
