Contacten, mobiliteit & transfers in een grensgebied (1559-1659)

English summary: In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, the Catholic printing press flourished as never before in the church province of Cambrai as a result of cross-border exchanges. The province was founded in 1559 and united the French-speaking regions in the south of the Habsburg Netherlands, today spread over France and Belgium. Bordering the Channel coast, France, and the Holy Roman Empire, the region was a transit area between the British Isles, France, the Netherlands, and German-speaking countries. Because of its central location and since it was an early bastion of Catholic reform, it also proved to be an attractive refuge for Catholics from surrounding regions. Using the method of transregional history, this book examines the share of cross-border contacts, mobility, and transfers in the development of a highly productive and innovative religious book production. The church province of Cambrai emerges as an area with an unexpectedly central position in the exchange of Catholic texts in early modern Europe.
