Castellio und seine Mitstreiter bundeln in ihrer Anthologie von Texten der Kirchenvater, Reformatoren und zeitgenossischer Humanisten die Argumente gegen Glaubenszwang und zeigen, dass dieser im konstantinischen Staatskirchentum begrundet ist. Sie lenken den Blick auf den Anfang der Reformation Luthers und seine Visionen einer universalen Kirche und des Laienpriestertums, die im Zeitalter der Konfessionalisierung verloren zu gehen drohten – nicht nur in Wittenberg, sondern auch in Genf, Zurich oder Strassburg. In der deutschen und franzosischen Fassung manifestiert sich zudem der anhaltende Widerstand gegen das kaiserliche Interim 1548. Die Edition zeigt die weite Ausstrahlung des Basler Castellio-Kreises nach der Hinrichtung Michel Servets 1553.
