The Yezidis consider themselves the people of Taus-u-Melek, the angel peacock. They differ from other peoples in the cosmogony of the formation of their community and therefore traditionally practice endogamy. Conversion is excluded. Only through endogamy, according to them, the difference of the groups can be maintained. In this way, they protect their traditions and the execution of the integrity of their community is ensured. At the same time, however, the disengagement from the old forms and the need for reform become apparent. The Yezidis are therefore establishing new spaces for action by redefining the criteria of separation and exclusion. In this way they try to find a solution for their practical needs. The Berlin ethnologist and religious scholar Banu Yalkut Breddermann has been following the fate of the Yezidis since the 1990s. In 2014, after the acts of violence committed by IS terrorists against the Yezidis in the Shingal region of Iraq, she initiated a relief campaign that she continues with great commitment to this day. The People of Angel Peacock was published in its first edition in 2001 by Das Arabische Buch. This was followed in 2002 by a Turkish translation of the study, which was published under the title Melek Tavus’un Halki. Ezidiler published by Metis Yayinlari and is now in its 5th edition. For the present new edition in German, the study was revised and expanded.
