English summary: In this book, the author examines the idea of sin in the Gospel of John. The theme of sin in John has been overlooked in the last few years, and thus this work is an important contribution to the field of Johannine soteriology. The author examines all the relevant evidence on the concept of ‘sin’, and it becomes clear that the confrontation between God and the unbelieving world, which is implied in the prologue, constitutes the horizon for the unfolding of the idea of sin. The Fourth Gospel develops a pronounced understanding of manifestation, in which sin is dealt with not as a legal offence or a moral transgression but rather as a total contradiction of God’s manifestation in Jesus Christ. The fact that Jesus Christ gave his life as atonement makes it obvious that the legal dispute between God and the unbelieving world was decided in favor of God, his manifestation and his community. German description: Das Johannesevangelium ist in den letzten Jahren zunehmend in den Blickpunkt biblischer Forschung geraten. Die fur das Verstandnis des 4. Evangeliums grundlegende Sundenthematik ist jedoch nicht in gleichem Masse wie etwa bei Paulus berucksichtigt worden.Rainer Metzner erhellt diesen Bereich johanneischer Soteriologie. Er untersucht alle einschlagigen Belege zum Begriff ‘Sunde’. Dabei wird deutlich, dass die bereits im Prolog angedeutete Konfrontation von Gott und unglaubiger Welt den Horizont fur die Entfaltung des Sundenbegriffs bildet. Der 4. Evangelist entwickelt ein ausgepragtes Offenbarungsverstandnis, durch das die Sunde nicht als Verstoss gegen das Gesetz oder als moralische Verfehlung, sondern als totaler Widerspruch gegen Gottes Offenbarung in Jesus Christus zur Geltung kommt. Das Johannesevangelium zeigt, dass die Sundenthematik im Zusammenhang des Rechtsstreites Gottes mit der unglaubigen Welt entfaltet wird. Die suhnende Lebenshingabe Jesu Christi macht offenbar, dass der Rechsstreit zugunsten Gottes, seines Offenbarers und seiner Gemeinde entschieden wird.Rainer Metzner untersucht den theologiegeschichtlichen Standort des Johannesevangeliums, um die Eigenart des johanneischen Sundenbegriffs deutlich zu machen. Der 4. Evangelist steht Paulus und dem 1. Johannesbrief nahe. Er hat das Anliegen der paulinischen Sundenthematik in einer gegenuber der Gesetzesproblematik bei Paulus veranderten Lage zur Geltung gebracht. Der 1. Johannesbrief hat den johanneischen Sundenbegriff auf die aktuelle innergemeindliche Konfrontation hin ausgelegt.
