Daniel Maier examines concepts of happiness in Second Temple literature. By analyzing different traditions of understanding the good life in Ancient Judaism, he opens up fresh perspectives on concepts of happiness in the New Testament that have been largely overlooked in the scholarly study of this field so far.
Was ist “Gluck” fur die Autoren des Neuen Testaments und fur ihre judischen Zeitgenossen innerhalb und ausserhalb Palastinas? Dieser wichtigen, aber dennoch selten gestellten Frage geht Daniel Maier mittels der Analyse verschiedener Gluckstraditionen auf den Grund. Dabei untersucht er in einem ersten Schritt sowohl unterschiedliche Darstellungen der judischen Geschichte (z. B. Jubilaenbuch, Flavius Josephus) als auch philosophische Uberlegungen (z. B. Philo von Alexandria) aus der Zeit des Zweiten Tempels auf deren Konzepte eines guten Lebens. Auf diesem Fundament aufbauend gelingt es dem Autor, verschiedene Formen des Glucks in den neutestamentlichen Texten zu identifizieren und diese in ihre judisch-literarische Umwelt einzuordnen. Durch diesen Kontext ergibt sich ein neuartiges Verstandnis von dem, was das “Gluck” fur die neutestamentlichen Autoren und die fruhen Christen war.
