In der Geschichte der Philosophie interpretiert man Platon immer wieder als einen Vertreter des ‚universale ante rem‘, während Aristoteles als Vertreter des ‚universale in re‘ gilt. Doch welche Position nimmt der bedeutendste antike Aristoteles-Kommentator Alexander von Aphrodisias ein? Vertritt auch er eine bestimmte Form des ‚universale‘?
Die vorliegende Studie zeigt in philologischer Detailarbeit, dass der Universalienbegriff bei Alexander differenziert verstanden werden muss: Ob das Allgemeine der Inbegriff aller sachlichen Möglichkeiten oder eine Auswahl davon oder lediglich eine leere Abstraktion unseres Denkens ist, hängt wesentlich davon ab, ob es methodisch korrekt und sachlich angemessen gebildet wurde. Alexanders Universalienlehre beinhaltet somit alle drei Formen des ‚universale‘ in einem einheitlichen System. Die hier vorgelegte Deutung erlaubt damit auch ein besseres Verständnis des Allgemeinen bei Aristoteles.
