English summary: In the 1520s, radical movements were responsible for fomenting iconoclasm directed against idolatry and the veneration of saints in many places of worship. Martin Luther did not reject images in principle, but found them useful if they contributed to the understanding of scripture and preaching. His own portrait served as an instrument of visual propaganda as well as being used for documentary and didactic purposes in the enforcing the Reformation. As part of this process, portraits of Luther that depicted him as an ambassador for the Reformation or illustrated his biographical journey had an important function.
