Une tempete s’est levee alors que nous etions en mer Alors le navire sombra, et de ceux qui s’y trouvaient, pas un ne survecut. Je fus depose dans une ile par une vague de la mer et passai trois jours absolument seul, avec mes pensees pour toute compagnie, allonge sous l’abri d’un arbre, car j’avais cherche avidement de l’ombre. Enfin, j’allongeai les jambes afin de rechercher de quoi me remplir la bouche et je decouvris qu’il y avait la des figues, du raisin et toutes sortes de legumes magnifiques ; qu’il y avait aussi des figues de sycomore?- des vertes et des mures – et des concombres, comme s’ils etaient cultives ; qu’il y avait enfin des poissons et des oiseaux : bref, qu’il n’etait rien que l’ile ne contint. Je m’en rassasiai mais dus en laisser a terre tant il y en avait sur mes bras : puis, ayant saisi un baton a feu, je fis jaillir une flamme et fis un holocauste aux dieux.
