The concept of ‘mindfulness’ or ‘attention’ seems to be a modern phenomenon: in the 20th and 21st century, the debate in the humanities has been focusing on the constitutive effect of mindfulness/attention on the ‘condicio humana’ in the age of mass communication, but also on the way mindfulness/attention is challenged by the immense variety of stimuli on offer. It is the art of oratory that provides the idea of mindfulness/attention with most scope in which to unfold.

Yet the world of rhetorical communication has certainly not only been influenced by questions surrounding attention in modern times. A profound understanding of human mindfulness/attention was already being sought during earlier stages in the development of rhetorical theory. This study analyzes the ‘corpus’ of Cicero, the most significant Roman orator and theorist on oratory, in relation to explicit and implicit strategies for mindfulness/attention. It concludes that Cicero made fundamental contributions to the development, the theory and practical application of the concept of mindfulness/attention. The analysis approaches Cicero’s rhetoric from a literary, philosophical, psychological, sociological and historical perspective. German description: Aufmerksamkeit scheint ein modernes Phanomen zu sein: Ihr konstitutiver Einfluss auf die ‘condicio humana’ im Zeitalter der Massenkommunikation, aber auch ihre Bedrohung durch die immense Vielfalt der dargebotenen Reize bestimmen die geisteswissenschaftlichen Debatten des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts. Den grossten Entfaltungsspielraum bietet ihr die Kunst der Rede. Die Welt der rhetorischen Kommunikation wird freilich nicht erst in modernen Zeiten von Aufmerksamkeitsfragen bestimmt; vielmehr lasst sich schon in fruhen Phasen rhetorischer Theoriebildung das Bemuhen um ein profundes Verstandnis der menschlichen Aufmerksamkeit erkennen. In der hier angezeigten Studie wird das ‘corpus’ des bedeutendsten romischen Redners und Redetheoretikers, Ciceros, auf seine expliziten und impliziten Aufmerksamkeitsstrategien hin untersucht. Es zeigt sich, dass Cicero wesentliche Beitrage zur Begriffsbildung, Theorie und praktischen Anwendung des Phanomens Aufmerksamkeit geleistet hat. Der Zugang zu Ciceros Rhetorik wird dabei aus literaturwissenschaftlicher, philosophischer, psychologischer, soziologischer und historischer Perspektive gesucht.
