English summary: Where, when, and how was the riddle used in order to reflect the possibilities, conditions, and boundaries of human understanding? After a revision of the approaches from the 20th century, which were chiefly solution-oriented, to the puzzle, the riddle is conceived in this work as a hermeneutic marginal figure, who stands at the beginning of philosophical and poetological determined rules. On the basis of cross-genre individual analyses of ancient, early modern, and modern texts that are related to each other through the riddle-figures of the Sphinx and Princess Turandot, a functional and differential typology of the riddle is developed. It offers against the background of an existential hermeneutic, movement between dissolution and deliverance and refers to the necessity of alternative interpretive models within literary studies. The latter are not based on the answer, but on the council of the riddle, that is always proven new and different in the literary dialog of periods and cultures. German description: Wo, wann und wie wird das Ratsel eingesetzt, um Moglichkeiten, Bedingungen und Grenzen menschlichen Verstehens zu reflektieren? Nach einer Revision der im 20. Jahrhundert uberwiegend ludistisch-losungsorientierten Ansatze ist das Ratsel hier als eine hermeneutische Grenzfigur konzipiert, die am Anfang philosophischer und poetologischer Standortbestimmungen steht. Auf der Basis gattungsubergreifender Einzelanalysen antiker, fruhneuzeitlicher und moderner Texte, die uber die Ratselfiguren Sphinx und Turandot aufeinander bezogen sind, wird eine funktional ausdifferenzierte Typologie des Ratsels entwickelt. Sie vermittelt vor dem Horizont einer existentiellen Hermeneutik zwischen Bewegungen der Auflosung sowie der Erlosung und verweist auf die Notwendigkeit alternativer, literaturwissenschaftlicher Deutungsmodelle. Letztere basieren nicht auf der Losung, sondern auf dem Rat des Ratsels, der sich im literarischen Dialog der Zeiten und Kulturen stets neu und anders bewahrt.
