Depuis quelques annees, la question de l’emprisonnement dans l’Antiquite, en particulier a Rome, suscite un interet nouveau. Sans s’etre concertes, des chercheurs de plusieurs pays d’Europe ont tout recemment redecouvert, chacun de son cote, ce theme trop longtemps neglige par les historiens du monde classique. Une equipe strasbourgeoise les a reunis en decembre 1997 pour un colloque de deux journees, dont ce livre est issu. Le fait carceral y est aborde en ses aspects multiples : le droit, avec notamment la question de savoir s’il a existe dans le monde romain une peine de prison ; les conditions concretes de l’incarceration, qui font de celle-ci, dans de nombreux cas, une forme de torture ; les representations collectives, a travers lesquelles l’enfermement et les entraves apparaissent comme la negation de toute dignite… Ces approches croisees revelent un phenomene complexe, qui eclaire les modes d’organisation, les valeurs et les angoisses des societes antiques. Et pas seulement de celles-ci.
