Die 137 in diesem Band veroffentlichten Briefe von Januar bis Marz 1547 zeigen anschaulich, wie sich die protestantischen Reichsstadte des suddeutschen Raums, darunter Augsburg, Strassburg und Ulm, dem katholischen Kaiser Karl V. unterwarfen, wieso Konstanz dies aber nicht tat – und wie die vier protestantischen Stadte und deren neun katholisch gebliebene Verbundete miteinander auskamen. Die Briefe dokumentieren auch, wie bikonfessionelle Gebiete wie etwa der Thurgau oder das Bundnerland Pfarrern in Schwierigkeiten einen idealen Unterschlupf boten. So erfahrt man im Briefwechsel nicht nur vieles uber den damals 42-jahrigen Bullinger, sondern auch uber das Umfeld der 52 Personen und Institutionen aus insgesamt 18 verschiedenen Ortschaften, mit denen er wahrend dieser ersten drei Monate des Jahres 1547 korrespondierte.
