Niklaus von Flue (1417-1487) spielt in der schweizerischen Nationalgeschichte sowohl als religiose wie als politische Integrationsfigur eine bedeutende Rolle. Von der Reformation bis ins 20. Jahrhundert war die Wahrnehmung des Einsiedlers vom Ranft stark von der konfessionellen Zweiteilung der Eidgenossenschaft gepragt. Wahrend Bruder Klaus auf katholischer Seite vor allem als eucharistischer Heiliger und Prophet der Glaubensspaltung galt, betonten die Reformierten primar seine zivilreligiose Rolle als Mahner zu politischer Einigkeit. Fritz Gloor verfolgt die unterschiedlichen Interpretationen der Gestalt von Bruder Klaus und ihre Hintergrunde vom 15. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und beleuchtet damit ein Stuck Konfessionsgeschichte. Ein besonderes Augenmerk gilt der reformierten Perspektive auf Niklaus von Flue, die aufgrund zahlreicher kaum bekannter Quellentexte erstmals zusammenhangend dargestellt wird. Im Jahr 2017, in dem sowohl des 600. Geburtstags des Ranftheiligen wie auch 500 Jahren Reformation gedacht wird, ist das Buch ein Beitrag zu einer okumenischen Erinnerungskultur.
