This volume documents the presentations from the 13th Annual Conference of the Society for University Collections, which took place at the University of Vienna in cooperation with the Austrian Museum Association. The focus was on “problematic” collections: on the one hand, with regard to the contexts of their acquisition, production, and use (“sensitive objects”); on the other hand, due to their specific materiality (“human remains,” particular fragility, limited durability, difficult storage, etc.). The aim is to highlight that universities, too, house numerous objects and collections that can be classified as “problematic” and that, in many cases, lie dormant. Above all, the demand for the greatest possible (digital) accessibility challenges collections and creates a growing need for discussion. This volume brings together the problem outlines and proposed solutions presented during the conference and also includes a comic that demonstrates a new approach to handling sensitive objects.
