This book is an investigation into the concept of understanding. It tries to contribute to a theory of understanding by examining certain kinds of understanding, namely the under-standing of a language and the understanding of non-linguistic actions. It defends an account of understanding according to which understanding has to be considered as a certain kind of ability that can be exercised in linguistic as well as in non-linguistic actions.
