Das Augustinus-Lexikon ist sowohl ein Begriffs- als auch ein Real-Lexikon. In alphabetischer Reihenfolge erfasst es Begriffe, Personen und Sachen, die fur Leben, Werk und Lehre Augustins von Bedeutung sind. Um grossere Zusammenhange darstellen zu konnen, berucksichtigt das Lexikon nicht nur Augustins Biographie und Schriften, sondern bezieht auch seine kirchenpolitische Stellung, die Personlichkeiten seiner Umgebung sowie den zeitgeschichtlichen Kontext mit ein. Wegen des kaum uberschaubaren und von der Forschung erst teilweise aufgearbeiteten Einflusses Augustins auf die Nachwelt wird die Wirkungsgeschichte ausgeklammert. Die Artikel werden in deutscher, englischer oder franzosischer Sprache veroffentlicht. In anderen Sprachen abgefasste Artikel werden im Einvernehmen mit den Mitarbeitern in eine der drei Sprachen ubersetzt.
