Aucun aspect de la pensee de Comte ne l’a autant desservi que sa pretention a fonder une nouvelle religion: ce faisant, il a en effet reussi le tour de force de mettre pour une fois d’accord les croyants et les incroyants. La plus qu’ailleurs, il n’y a pas de place pour lui. Les sociologues du religieux l’ignorent puisque, consideree comme fait social, le religion positiviste n’a eu qu’une existence breve et extremement localisee. Les theoriciens du logico-politique l’ignorent aussi, puisque le lien intime etabli entre politique et religion par le positivisme a ceci en propre de faire deliberement l’economie du theologique. L’auteur du Systeme n’a rien renie des projets du secretaire de Saint-Simon: en 1852 comme en 1822, il s’agit de reorganiser sans Dieu ni roi . Ca et la pourtant, quelques signes donnent a penser que cette indifference n’a rien de definitif; apres une longue desaffection, l’oeuvre de Comte connait un regain d’interet qui s’etend aussi a la religion de l’Humanite, abordee ici dans une perspective plus historique que dogmatique.
