Auf der sudlichen Erdhalbkugel rund 9000 Kilometer von der Heimat entfernt wirken evangelische Kirchen unter Palmen eher exotisch. Fur die Kolonisten im ehemaligen Deutsch-Sudwestafrika waren sie jedoch Teil ihrer nationalen Identitat. Zwischen Atlantik und Wuste bauten sie zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ihre Gotteshauser im romanischen, gotischen und barocken Stil auch, um die Uberlegenheit deutscher Kultur zu demonstrieren. Endete das koloniale Abenteuer bereits 1914, so sind die Kirchen in Windhoek, Luderitz und Swakopmund bis heute sichtbare Zeugnisse dieser fast vergessenen Epoche. Anschaulich illustriert Reiner Sorries die Vielfalt des evangelischen Kirchenbaus im heutigen Namibia und beleuchtet auch ihre Bedeutung als Ausdruck konfessioneller Selbstdarstellung.
