The painters of the Florentine and Roman Renaissance, Fra Angelico, Michelangelo, and Rafael, were capable of depicting dialog, both acts of speech and listening, in their complexity to the viewer as a communication of content. In the fifteenth century, concepts of hearing were based in the classical understanding of the anatomy of listening and its devices, which also found expression in the development of rhetoric and poetics. Through gestures and mimicry, artists shaped the depiction of hearing into a vital component of their images, which are able to transform the observer from viewer to listener. German text.
