This book explores one of the key periods in the history of medallic art: the emergence and development of the French medallic “new wave” in the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. Numismatic pieces of this period — coins, medals, plaquettes, tiny objects of applied arts, and jewelry — are always remarkable in any museum. These artworks are beautiful, attractive, and fascinating. They catch one’s eye and intuitively form a specific group of works that one must further study to get a deeper understanding.

This volume concentrates on the works by French artists and highlights the place and role of their work in the history of medallic art. It explores symbolical, allegorical, and narrative language of these pieces with their traditional and innovative intonations. This book also covers the history of the collection of French modern medals and plaquettes at the Pushkin Museum from 1912 to the present day.

The Catalogue includes 199 medals and plaquettes from the numismatic collection of the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts. These are works by more than fifty French artists, including major figures such as Jules-Clément Chaplain, Louis Oscar Roty, Frédéric Charles Victor de Vernon, and Jean-Baptiste-Daniel Dupuis.
