I termini greci laburinthos e numphe appaiono formati su arcaici elementi lessicali che trovano riscontro in lingue semitiche nord-occidentali come l’ebraico. Sono quindi indiziati di far parte di un sostrato linguistico egeo-cananaico penetrato sia in greco che nelle lingue semitiche della regione siro-palestinese, durante le fasi di sedentarizzazione nel bacino del Mediterraneo orientale delle popolazioni parlanti questi idiomi. Tali elementi lessicali si trovano inseriti in un ristretto novero di altri termini comuni al greco e all’ebraico, tutti caratterizzati da una cospicua valenza sacrale che ne avrebbe giustificato l’adozione. Per queste considerevoli valenze simboliche, laburinthos e numphe sono peraltro ancora vitali, nel rispetto delle specifiche corrispondenze fonetiche, in italiano e nelle lingue di cultura occidentali contemporanee. Labirinto e ninfa sono quindi nomi la cui forma fonetica, elaborata dal greco a partire da materiale lessicale preesistente, attraversa i millenni e giunge a noi dalla preistoria linguistica del Mediterraneo orientale a seguito di una sorprendente catena di prestiti.I significati a essi propri conservano nelle numerose connotazioni, di cui si sono via via arricchiti, denotazioni originarie di tale rilievo da farne le denominazioni di due fondamentali archetipi.
