Grufte sind bedeutende Zeugnisse der europaischen Bestattungskultur vom 16. bis ins 19. Jahrhundert. Einst als Familiengrablegen der Elite angelegt, sorgten sie durch ihre trockene, gut beluftete Bauweise fur eine lange Erhaltung der Sarge, Leichname und Grabbeigaben. Unter anderem Plunderungen und Vandalismus waren und sind bis heute vielerorts die Folgen. Hier versucht die Sepulkralarchaologie in enger Zusammenarbeit mit vielen weiteren Fachbereichen zu retten, was noch zu retten ist. Die Beitrage dieses Sonderhefts zeigen auf, wie entscheidend die Erhaltung und Dokumentation dieser Kulturdenkmale ist, aber auch, was alles notwendig ist, um den schmalen Grat zwischen wissenschaftlicher Aufarbeitung und der Wiederherstellung eines wurdevollen Zustands zu beschreiten.
