A partire dalla seconda meta del Duecento, sulle mura dei piu importanti edifici pubblici delle citta italiane di tradizione comunale cominciarono ad apparire sorprendenti immagini di persone portate al rogo, impiccate, capovolte, in pose grottesche e offensive. Erano l’espressione di una nuova pratica penale in via di consolidamento e destinata a sopravvivere fino al secolo XVI ed oltre: la pittura infamante. Con essa i depositari del potere pubblico punivano, con tutti i crismi dell’ufficialita, i colpevoli di determinati delitti, seguendo una via consona alla mentalita del tempo. In questo libro – un vero classico di storia medievale, finalmente di nuovo disponibile in una edizione aggiornata e ampliata – l’autore esamina la pittura infamante nei suoi piu diversi aspetti: dove e quando nacque e si sviluppo, che efficacia ebbe nel giudizio dei contemporanei, quali fini si propose, quali situazioni le furono piu congeniali, fino a spiegarne la genesi in riferimento alla particolare evoluzione della societa dei comuni, tra guelfismo e ghibellinismo, tra grandi e popolo.
