Johanna Narten begann ihr Studium an der Universität des Saarlandes in Klassischer Philologie. Es war Ernst Zinn, der sie dort auf die Vorlesungen des gerade berufenen Karl Hoffmann aufmerksam machte und ihr prophezeite, sie werde “mit fliegenden Fahnen zum ihm übergehen”.
Er sollte Recht behalten. In Karl Hoffmanns Vorlesungen ging ihr, wie sie zu sagen pflegt, “die Sonne auf”, und sie wechselte zur Indoiranistik und Indogermanistik.
Im Jahre 1955 folgte sie ihrem Lehrer und späteren Kollegen Karl Hoffmann nach Erlangen. Sie wurde in Erlangen promoviert und habilitiert und lehrte hier als Privatdozentin, Wissenschaftliche Rätin und Extraordinaria.
