Die spatantiken Zauberpapyri aus Agypten bieten einen reichen Fundus an Informationen uber die in der Spatantike alltagliche Praxis der Magie sowie die Magier und ihre Kundschaft. Die Magier gestalteten ihre Rituale sehr differenziert, immer passend zum jeweiligen Ziel des Rituals. Doch welche Dienstleistungen genau boten die Magier ihrer Kundschaft an? Was hatten die Rituale gemein? Und wie wurden sie an die jeweilige Situation angepasst? Tobias Nowitzki betrachtet erstmals alle Rituale des Corpus gemeinsam – inklusive der erst in den letzten Jahren edierten Stucke – und ordnet sie unterschiedlichen Arten der Magie zu. Er geht den Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschieden der verschiedenen Zauberarten nach und setzt dieses Corpus schliesslich in Bezug zu verwandten Formen der Magie. Als Vergleichsbeispiel dient das judische Buch der Geheimnisse, Sefer Ha-Razim. Anhand dieses Vergleiches kann Nowitzki Hinweise auf gemeinsame Stromungen in der Gedanken- und Vorstellungswelt der spatantiken Magie ziehen.
