English summary: In this volume the pioneering Bavarian missionary Johann Flierl (1858-1947) reminisces about his eventful life on three continents. He takes the reader into the rural Oberpfalz of his childhood, the world of German emigrants in South Australia and into everyday life on missions amongst desert aborigines or in the tropical north of the country. His main subject however is New Guinea. Flierl tells the reader about life in this German colony and portrays the people with whom he came into contact: indigenous men, women and children, Lutheran missionaries and their families, colonial officials, sailors, doctors of tropical medicine, coffee planters, butterfly collectors and adventurers. The autobiography of the most well known German missionary in Papua New Guinea is presented here for the first time in the form of a complete critical edition. Flierl’s great-granddaughter, the Giessen based historian Susanne Froehlich, introduces and comments on the text and has supplemented it with written and visual material, including 75 mostly unpublished photographs from the family archive.
