Alfred Schindler war Professor fur Alte Kirchengeschichte in Heidelberg, Bern und Zurich und Leiter des Instituts fur Schweizerische Reformationsgeschichte. In seinen Fachgebieten schuf er Grundlagen. Vor allem der Augustinus-Forschung widmete er sich intensiv und erarbeitete wesentliche Beitrage fur das Augustinus-Lexikon. Wolfgang Hubner zeichnet ein detailliertes Lebensbild des Lehrers und Forschers. Er schildert Schindlers weitgespannte Interessen in Wissenschaft und Praxis, seine Bereitschaft zu interdisziplinarer Zusammenarbeit, seine Offenheit fur die Okumene sowie seine Zusammenschau von Bild und Text, die in einer fruchtbaren Zusammenarbeit mit seiner Frau, der Schriftstellerin Regine Schindler, mundete.
