Als Stadtpfarrer von Wittenberg, Universitatslehrer und theologischer Schriftsteller befasste sich Johannes Bugenhagen 1525 und 1526 besonders mit den Problemen um Abendmahl und Zolibat. Flugschriften wie sein Offener Brief gegen Zwingli “Contra novum errorem” finden sich im vorliegenden Band ebenso wie die umfangreiche Abhandlung “De coniugio episcoporum et diaconorum” gegen das Verbot der Priesterehe. Ubersetzungen der lateinischsprachigen Texte ins Fruhneuhochdeutsche erschienen zeitgleich im Druck und werden hier parallel zur lateinischen Fassung ediert. Bugenhagens Fahigkeit, reformatorische Theologie als Schriftausleger in gemeinverstandlicher Form zusammenzufassen, bewahrte sich vor allem im breit ausgefuhrten Sendbrief an die Hamburger. Der Titel des parallel in niederdeutscher und fruhhochdeutscher Sprache edierten Traktats kundigt an, nach welchen Grundsatzen Bugenhagen ab 1528 die Kirchen Norddeutschlands und Danemarks neu ordnete: “Van dem Christen louen vnde rechten guden wercken”.
