A la Renaissance, le terme de ” prononciation ” definit prioritairement le champ de l’action rhetorique et refere a la part sensible du discours de l’orateur (le geste et la voix). Or, a un moment ou l’imprime semble d’ores et deja s’etre impose, la lecture a haute voix et l’art de bien prononcer continuent a etre valorises dans les pratiques culturelles et cet ouvrage tente de montrer qu’a la Renaissance et encore au XVIIe siecle, l’ecrit est, malgre une idee recue, concurrence par l’oral. Cette concurrence entre deux modes de transmission possibles des textes n’est pas seulement analysee ici en termes theoriques (a travers les arts poetiques ou rhetoriques et les discours sur les langues) mais elle est aussi etudiee en termes pratiques, c’est-a-dire dans des domaines ou l’expression orale et la diction sont necessaires : poesie, musique, oraison et theatre. Au terme d’un parcours qui fait ainsi passer de la prononciation en poesie a l’articulation des langues vulgaires, cet ouvrage se propose donc de reevaluer la relation entre le dit et l’ecrit afin de montrer que les XVIe et XVIIe siecles n’ont pas neglige ce que Paul Zumthor appelait la ” voix ” et ont meme reflechi a la maniere dont la possible proferation d’un texte pouvait influer sur son ecriture meme.
