La pensee est-elle un phenomene essentiellement interieur et subjectif? Ou, au contraire, est-elle un fait entierement objectivable? L’auteur s’oppose tant a une approche “introspective” qu’a une approche “materialiste” de la pensee. Il n’interroge pas seulement les differents sens donnes au terme de “pensee” (comme un evenement, un etat, une activite, ou encore un attribut), mais aussi le medium de la pensee, de meme que ses conditions de possession, ou les rapports entre pensee, concepts et langage. Les deux extraits de textes commentes lui permettent d’appuyer l’hypothese selon laquelle la “pensee” n’est pas une activite mentale, mais qu’elle a trait aux manieres de se comporter et qu’elle ne peut alors etre detachee de toute circonstance.
