Die Funktion eines Namens erschopft sich in der Vormoderne haufig nicht in der Bezeichnung eines Individuums.

A name is not merely an identifier of an individual. In pre-modern societies name-giving is a deliberate act often which might legitimise political claims and agendas. Especially the personal names of elites display performative qualities to secure past and present or to herald the future. The contributors of this volume analyse this phenomenon in a transcultural perspective comparing practices of (re)naming in Chinese, Indian and European regions.
