Arriving in the French capital in July 1658, Moliere’s troupe revived Le Depit amoureux, first staged in Beziers in December 1655. But the real Parisian breakthrough came with the tremendous success of Les Precieuses ridicules in November 1659. Caricature and burlesque blend with the social reality of preciosity and gallantry.
