Alexandrie, ete 1882. La metropole commerciale et cosmopolite se trouve au centre des luttes de pouvoir entre le khedive, le ministre de la Guerre Arabi et les Brittaniques, dans un pays qui tente de s’emanciper politiquement. Habitants egyptiens et residents etrangers sont terrorises par le bombardement massif de leur ville, les incendies et les pillages qui suivent, traumatises par une occupation violente et une justice etrangere expeditive. Puis, d’aout 1882 et jusqu’a la mi-septembre, Alexandrie sert de base arriere d’une guerre qui investit ses environs. Le recit des heures et des journees les plus tragiques vecues dans les forts, les principaux quartiers, les batiments et lieux strategiques, donne a voir les episodes dramatiques de cette guerre. Reporters internationaux et graveurs de presse expliquent et illustrent les difficultes des Alexandrins, protagonistes comme temoins, notamment des Europeens favorables a l’Egypte. Journaux de bord, correspondances, autobiographies, memoires – de residents, correspondants de presse, diplomates – permettent egalement de reconstituer l’histoire de ces mois de violence. “L’evenement” marqua les esprits a Alexandrie et dans toute l’Egypte; s’ensuivit l’occupation militaire et l’administration civile brittanique indirecte du pays. Espaces urbains, regles de sociabilite, rapports de force intercommunautaires: tout fut bouleverse.
