Eva-Maria Hanser examines the complex interdependencies early professional theatre in the German-speaking area had with the institutional powers of church, state and city. The basis for this study is the Codex Ia 38.589. The Codex consists of fourteen handwritten play texts based on literary sources of various provenance and associated with the performance practice of various troupes. The study seeks to gain insights into the performance practice of early professional theatre and its underlying principles by contextualizing it with early modern discourses, other performative practices and forms of theatre.
