The battle fought by two Roman armies and their leaders, Septimius Severus and Clodius Albinus, on 19 February 197 near Lugdunum (Lyon), is a historic event of the utmost importance, which decided the fate of the Roman Empire by putting an end to nearly four years of civil wars. Although little has been known about the battle of Lugdunum for a long time, this book provides a comprehensive historical and archaeological re-examination, carried out by a team of specialists who have paid close attention to textual and material sources, the most recent discoveries and the latest advances in research. This collective work seeks to rediscover the significance of the battle in the political and military culture of its time, as well as its historical impact on scales as diverse as the Roman Empire, Roman Gaul and the city of Lyon.
