Dialogues interdisciplinaires sur le statut du traité d'agriculture

Entre l’Antiquite greco-romaine et l’epoque moderne s’est constituee en Europe une tradition de traites en prose regroupant des conseils sur l’organisation et la mise en culture d’un domaine agricole ou d’un jardin, de L’Economique de Xenophon a La Maison rustique d’Estienne et Liebault. Cependant ces ouvrages, emanant generalement de hauts personnages lettres, ferus de poesie et de philosophie, soucieux d’ethique, mais aussi d’economie, de medecine ou de gastronomie, parfois plus interesses par l’anecdote, la recette paradoxographique ou l’objet curieux que par le geste le plus quotidien, se souciaient-ils veritablement de transmettre un enseignement pratique a des hommes de terrain? A la suite d’un colloque tenu a Lyon du 1er au 3 juin 2022, ce volume fait dialoguer differentes approches disciplinaires – litterature, histoire, archeologie, archeobotanique – en centrant les discussions sur un texte ou les images qui l’ornent, sur un type de plante cultivee (cereales, vigne), une methode de culture (compost, labours) ou un outil (moissonneuse gauloise, serpe de vigneron). Les contributions reunies ici etudient les interactions entre tradition et experimentation ou observation de terrain, la posture d’autorite assumee par les auteurs qui ecrivent sur l’agriculture, le role du destinataire des traites, praticien ou non, ou encore les enjeux ideologiques de ces ecrits. Car une telle confrontation du texte a la pratique ne vise pas tant, in fine, a jauger de la pertinence technique des traites qu’a montrer comment les textes construisent notre savoir sur les pratiques d’autrefois et comment les traces archeologiques laissees par ces dernieres, reciproquement, eclairent la nature des ecrits anciens sur l’agriculture.
