This is the first collected volume dedicated to Fronto’s epistolary work. By examining his letters as a literary project, and not just functional private texts, the seven case studies presented here look at the hybridity and dynamic character of the later correspondences to reveal their multifaceted communicative and performative potential.
Der Sammelband lenkt den Blick erstmals konsequent auf Frontos spate Briefbucher. Ziel ist ein Neuansatz gegenuber der Forschung, die Frontos Briefe auf die Funktion privater Gebrauchstexte reduziert. Dagegen verstehen die Beitrager und Beitragerinnen des Bandes Frontos Briefwerk als ein literarisches Projekt, das den Brief als hybrides und dynamisches Medium einsetzt und eine Edition durch den Autor nahelegt. Denn der Charakter der Briefe andert sich bei einer linearen Lekture: Bereits die Briefwechsel mit Mitgliedern des Kaiserhauses durchbrechen immer wieder ihre brieftypische Sprechhaltung, um kommunikative Pointen zu setzen. Umso mehr greifen die Spezialkorrespondenzen auf briefferne Rollen (z.B. des satirischen Lehrers, des Marchenerzahlers oder des lyrischen Sangers) zuruck. Sieben Fallstudien lassen dieses vielgestaltige kommunikative und performative Potenzial der Briefe anschaulich hervortreten.
